the curse of learning languages close to the ones you already know is you get too comfortable and you start mentally translating word by word
happened to me with spanish
all (CJKV) languages are about the same difficulty imho, i say this as someone who knows both mando and jp
there's tons of shared vocabulary but then each has their quirks
vietnamese has adjectives after the noun like in spanish, 6 tones, counters
mandarin has 4 tones + the grammar particles are in chinese characters too + lack of spaces + lots and lots of neologisms which you can only pick up through immersion + grammar is super vague + quality learning material is hard to come by
japanese has terribly unsystematic kanji readings (although they are at least limited to the 2136 joyo kanji), yoda speak, honorifics, and passive-aggressive ways to say things, but at least you can tell where the words begin and end
korean has yoda speak, honorifics, spaces, particles like tons of -eul -neun - ga -gwa in a sentence + multi-syllable nouns(edited)

i think it's near impossible to learn chinese and vietnamese without immersion
jp and kr have the benefit of having good study materials + media + generally rigid grammar structure
in mandarin you might learn that "chi" is eat" and "le" is similar to past tense so "chi le" is ate but then you can "tomorrow, i "chi le" then i go to the library"
